Examination and Grading System

1.1 Credit System

The University follows the Semester Pattern and Credit system of evaluation. The academic year is divided into 3 semesters. Each course shall have an integer number of credits, which reflects its weightage This helps the student to know the academic effort one has to put in, to successfully complete a course.

1.2 Assessment Of Performance

The system of evaluation in RGUKT is different from that of conventional universities. RGUKT has a multi-tier system of evaluation. There will be continuous assessment of students' performance throughout the semester and marks will be awarded. Each theory subject in a semester is evaluated for 100 marks, and the weightage of marks is given below:

  1. The theory courses have the following two components:
    1. Continuous evaluation through (40% weightage)
      1. Computer based online tests.
        1. Weekly (10% weightage)
        2. Monthly (30% weightage)
    2. The Semester-end examinations is through (weight age 60%)
      1. Computer based online tests (40% weightage).
      2. Paper based written test (20% weightage).
  2. The laboratory courses have the following two components.
    1. Continuous evaluation of laboratory work in lab class. Each laboratory course may be evaluated as follows:
      1. Experimental work in Laboratory class.
      2. Lab Report.
      3. Viva Voce.
    2. Semester-end examinations
      1. Experimental work , Results & Report.
      2. Viva Voce.

The system of numerical marking is followed, and the marks secured in Weekly tests, Monthly tests and End examination are recorded and converted into grades as per the Seven-point grading scale.

Table Showing the grading of marks
S.No Performance Marks Percentage Letter Grade
1 Excellent >= 90% E
2 Very good >= 80% A
3 Good >= 70% B
4 Fair >= 60% C
5 Average >= 50% D
6 Pass >= 40% P
7 Remedial <=40% F

Students who have failed to earn minimum pass marks of 40% in each course/subject will have to appear for the backlog courses/subjects in the Remedial Examinations.If the marks of test are increased the same will be considered for declaration of result.

1.3 Rules Regarding Remedial Examination

In order to provide an additional chance to students who fail in one or more theoretical or practical subjects in a semester, there will be a remedial examination equivalent to the end semester examination. However the grade of such student will be lowered down by one grade.ie If a student gets a 'B' grade it will be reduced to'C' grade. Student securing minimum grade for passing (i.e. grade 'P') will not be lowered. SGPA, CGPA will be calculated accordingly.

1.4 Calculation of SGPA & CGPA

A semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) will be computed for each semester. The SGPA will be calculated as follows:

where Ci = Credit for the course. GPi = the Grade Point obtained for the course and the summation over all the courses taken in that semester and 'n' is the number of subjects registered for the semester.

A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) will be computed for every student at the end of each semester. The CGPA would give the cumulative performance of a student from the first semester upto the end of the semester to which it refers and calculated as follows.

Where 'm' is the total number of semesters under consideration. Ci the total number of credit registered for during a particular semester and Si is the SGPA of that semester. Both SGPA and CGPA will be rounded off to the second place of decimal and recorded as such.

When a student gets the 'F' grade in any subject during a semester, the SGPA and the CGPA from that semester onwards will be tentatively calculated, taking only 'zero point' for each such 'F' grade. After the 'F' grade has been substituted by better grades during a subsequent remedial examination the SGPA and CGPA of all the semesters starting from the earliest semester in which the 'F' grade has been obtained, will be recomputed and recorded to take this change of grade into account.

Formula for Conversation of CGPA into equivalent percentage of marks

Average percentage of marks = CGPA*10

1.5 Academic Regulations For Awarding of Grades Effective From 2010-11

RGUKT follows a grading method which is a mix of fixed and relative grading for evaluation and award of grades for Pre-University, B Tech and Dual degree programmes from the academic year 2010 - 2011.

The grade cutoffs as per the absolute grading are as given below:
S.No Marks Grade Range Grade Points Per Credit % No of students expected to fall
1 90 - 100 Ex 10 Top 5% of Students.
2 80 - 89. A. 9 Next 20% of Students.
3 70 - 79 B 8 Next 35% of Students.
4 60 - 69 C 7 Next 20% of Students.
5 50 - 59 D 6 Next 15% of Students.
6 < 50 R 0 Next 5% of Students.
The procedure for award of grades is given below:
  1. In each subject marks awarded are compiled into cumulative frequency table. (Percentage of students crossing the threshold of marks given in decreasing order of marks scored.)
  2. It is pre supposed that following percentage of students shall fall in each grade. (Six-point grading scale)
  4. A new cut off mark for each of the grades is obtained following the relative grading system on the basis of the above mentioned percentage number of students expected to fall in each grade.
  5. New cutoff marks for awarding the grades are obtained as the lowest of the absolute grading system and the cutoffs obtained in the relative grading system as per (3) subjected to the maximum deviation of 10 marks from the fixed grading system defined at (2).In such a case the cutoff is limited to + 10 marks from the cutoffs of the fixed system.
  6. On appearing at the remedial examination in a subject a student will be entitled to the award of one grade lower than the actual grade scored. However the performance grade 'D' will remain unaltered.
  1. The seven point letter Grading System followed by the university in assessing students performance in a subject is as follows.
  2. S.No Performance Marks Percentage Letter Grade Grade point value per credit
    1 Excellent >= 90% E 10
    2 Very good >= 80% A 9
    3 Good >= 70% B 8
    4 Fair >= 60% C 7
    5 Average >= 50% D 6
    6 Pass >= 40% P 5
    7 Remedial <=40% F 0
  3. Highest possible CGPA in the system is 10.00
  4. Pass Requirements
    1. Minimum marks for Pass
      1. Theory 40%
      2. Practicals 40%
    2. Class awarded
    S.No Class Awarded Range of CGPA
    1 Distinction CGPA>=8.00
    2 First Class 7.00<=CGPA<8.00
    3 Second Class 6.00<=CGPA<7.00
    4 Pass Class 5.00<=CGPA<6.00
    5 Fail CGPA<5.00
